The Evolution of the Television Cooking Show

The main goal of a cooking show is basic: give famous, aspiring, or celebrity chefs an opportunity to cook their trademark dishes in a kitchen in front of a camera. This format of television program has become extremely popular with the viewing public. Cooking shows are one of the most popular shows on television currently.

Most people enjoy cooking, and when you add the dimension of reality TV, it hooks the viewer in throughout the journey of the show.

Most people identify with one or two contestants and become involved in their personal journeys throughout the show. The winner is given his or her very own cooking show on TV.

Why is there such a zealous interest in cooking shows today? In some ways it might be that it takes the mystery out of cooking well. Other people enjoy seeing the latest appliances available or feel a connection to the people starring in these shows. Usually, the hosts on these shows are not professionally trained through a specific culinary school. This makes their cooking seem more easily achievable for the average Jane, and helps an average cook improve her cooking skills.

All of these interests count towards the massive popularity these cooking shows now enjoy with television viewers. There is also a change of guard taking place with great chefs like Julia Child passing on, leaving room for new celebrities and experts to rise up in the culinary arts.

People enjoy the theatrics of chefs like Emeril LaGasse as he shouts, "BAM" or the acronyms Rachel Ray develops, which in a way become their own language, like EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and these all hook us into the programs and empower us in our own cooking endeavors.

It is becoming a competitive thing between TV networks to host the better cooking show and for those shows to involve fierce competition between contestants, as this is what really hooks the viewer. 

Of course, having a chef with a love for profanity is not the cornerstone to the success of all shows, as often what people are looking for is the handy hints and secret recipes offered and somehow the different terms used on these shows find their way into our own language.
